It was time. This last year the GIS Center went through an exhaustive exercise to update the standard print map for UW-Whitewater. Our goal was an improved map for visitors and new students that was simpler and easier to use than our old one.
In Spring 2016, we conducted our first round of small unmanned aerial vehicle (sUAV), or “drone,” training. Students went through ground school, flight simulator training, indoor flight skills, sUAV mapping software (Pix4D), and building drones from scratch.
Changes to FAA regulations for education allowed us to fly outside later in the semester.
Collaborating with the Rock River Coalition, we held a 15-day public event using the water quality array to map water quality along most of the Rock River in Wisconsin. The project included a real-time map of the data as we paddled down the river along with public presentations in communities along the route.
